2021/22 saw the return of Cristiano Ronaldo after 12 years away from the club. Despite a good goal-scoring return of 24 goals in 35 games the squad struggled which ultimately led to the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjær before being replaced by interim manager Ralf Ragnick.
